Alcova 2024, the seventh edition of the independent design platform, took place from April 15 to 21 during Milan Design Week, transforming two historic villas in Varedo—Villa Borsani and Villa Bagatti Valsecchi—into immersive spaces where contemporary design engaged with architectural heritage. Known for its ability to reimagine forgotten spaces, this year’s event provided a striking contrast between modernist and Lombard Baroque aesthetics, offering a unique stage for over 70 exhibitors, including designers, galleries, institutions, and brands.

Among the highlights, Atelier de Troupe introduced an Art Deco-inspired collection evoking transatlantic travel, seamlessly interacting with the grand staircase of Villa Borsani in collaboration with cc-tapis. Objects of Common Interest, in partnership with Bitossi, presented a series of vases inspired by ancient Greek architecture, positioned at the grand entrance of Villa Bagatti Valsecchi. Architect Junya Ishigami created a site-specific installation for MANIERA within the villa’s grotto, exploring the intersection of architecture and nature, while Studio Plastique & Snøhetta, in collaboration with Fornace Brioni, examined the potential of recycled glass and ceramic materials in sustainable design.

A new addition this year was the Alcova Design Shop, housed in the Loggiato delle Scuderie at Villa Bagatti Valsecchi, featuring a curated selection of collectible pieces and experimental design objects from past and present exhibitors. The event continued its tradition of exploring themes such as sustainability, craftsmanship, experimental aesthetics, and sociopolitical issues, reinforcing its role as a platform that challenges conventional design narratives. Beyond being an exhibition, Alcova 2024 was an experience, transforming historic interiors and outdoor spaces into a dynamic showcase of material innovation and creative expression. As anticipation builds for Alcova 2025, the event remains a key force in contemporary design, constantly pushing boundaries and redefining the way we engage with design in the context of history and architecture.
